THE GRAND CANYON: HOW MAJESTIC IS GOD’S NAME

Submitted by Pastor Frank on Tue, 04/21/2009 - 17:51.

Today, I make a trip that I have always wanted to make – a trip to the Grand Canyon. I am spending some time with my parents, and along with my wife, the four of us are making the five-hour trip. I am really excited because I am told that when you see the Grand Canyon, you come in instant contact with the glory and the majesty of God. A friend of mine went and said that all he could say was, in the words of Psalm 8,”How O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth.  He said that he fell down and worshipped. I am up in my devotion time praying and worshipping God to prepare for the trip. My devotional Scripture is Psalm 8 and this will be my constant refrain throughout the trip.

We are traveling to the Glass Bottom Skywalk on the Hualapai Indian Reservation at Grand Canyon West, Arizona (see picture below).  This Glass Bottom Skyway is a U-shaped glass walkway extending 70 feet (21 meters) from the canyon wall. The 30-million-dollar Skywalk will put a few scant inches of glass between visitors and a 4,000-foot (1,220-meter) plunge to the Colorado River. There is a huge discussion in the family as to whether or not I am going to walk out on that bridge.  When I told everyone that I was real clear that I was not going out on that bridge, my dad asked me about my faith.   He asked me: “Don’t you believe in God?” I  told him, “I believe in God, but I also believe the Bible when Jesus said, ‘Lo (L-O-W), I am with you always.’”   I will see if any of us have the courage to walk out on the Glass Bottom Skywalk.

The Grand Canyon is a massive rift in the Colorado Plateau that exposes uplifted Proterozoic and Paleozoic strata, and is also one of the six distinct physiographic sections of the Colorado Plateau province. It is not the deepest canyon in the world; Kali Gandaki Gorge in Nepal is far deeper, nor the real exams widest (Capertee Valley in Australia is about 1 km wider and longer than Grand Canyon) — but the Grand Canyon is known for its visually overwhelming size and its intricate and colorful landscape. Geologically it is significant because of the thick sequence of ancient rocks that are beautifully preserved and exposed in the security+ exam walls of the canyon. These rock layers record much of the early geologic history of the North American continent.Uplift associated with mountain building events later moved these sediments thousands of feet upward and created the Colorado Plateau. The higher elevation has also resulted in greater precipitation in the Colorado River drainage area, but not enough to change the Grand Canyon area from being semi-arid. The uplift of the Colorado Plateau is uneven, and the north-south trending Kaibab Plateau that Grand Canyon bisects is over a thousand feet higher at the North Rim (about 1,000 ft/300 m) than at the South Rim. Almost microsoft exams all runoff from the North Rim (which also gets more rain and snow) flows toward the Grand Canyon, while much of the runoff on the plateau behind the South Rim flows away from the canyon (following the general tilt). The result is deeper and longer tributary washes and canyons on the north side and shorter and steeper side canyons on the south side.
