EXCERPTS FROM MY LECTURES AT UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH AFRICA (UNISA)

I want to thank you for all of the positive feedback you have given in reference to my Africa videos. So, I would like to show you an excerpt of another video. It is pretty long and you do not have to watch it all. I delivered a lecture at the University of South Africa (UNISA) entitled, “Martin Luther King, Jr., Barack Obama, and the American Dream.” It was a great time as I was truly impressed with the quality and insightful questions that were asked of me and the dialogue that ensued after the lecture. There were seventy people in attendance. Approximately half of the group was professors and the other half students. It was a two hour session and I lectured for forty-five minutes and the rest was dialogue and discussion. Again, I was impressed with their knowledge of King and their keen interest in Barack Obama. I received many questions such as: Why did I think Jesse Jackson was crying at the inaugural? Was Obama going to use “soft” power and pull back from the “American empire” that Bush was so keen upon? What did I think of Michelle Obama’s role in Barack Obama’s life? How did Obama get so many young people involved? Could Obama endorse Black or Liberation theology? I absolutely loved it. It was a cross of religion, politics, and culture and I loved it. I was supposed to be the expert, but I learned valuable lessons from the people there about the South African context. They had Mandela and we have Obama and they kept drawing parallels.
Many people wonder why I go to Africa so many times. I do not go to Africa for the animals. I go because the people are so wonderful and intelligent and I teach and I learn. I am going back soon. When will it be continued? I am very interested in this train of thought and besides I cant finish my Oral report in Sociology class until I have finished watching the video. I can see very clearly why they call Dr. Thomas the Preachers Preacher. Waiting for the next post is the entire lecture available for purchase in the book store
